In many ways, building the perfect team is very much an art form. They say that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, which means that even one wrong move during the gathering of your team could spell trouble before they’ve even had a chance to show their stuff. If you truly want to build the best team that you can, the one that can effortlessly accomplish every challenge you put in front of them, you’ll want to keep a few key things in mind.

You’re Not Looking for the Perfect PERSON – You’re Looking for the Perfect TEAM

perfect teamPerhaps the number one thing to understand when it comes to building the perfect team is that you’re not looking for a collection of “uber-workers.” You’re looking for people who each bring something unique to the table. Everyone has their own skill sets, you need to understand how to put them together so that the team itself operates as a living, breathing whole.

In some cases, this may mean passing over an employee with an objectively better resume because that person only excels when working on their own. This person may have a tremendous amount of value elsewhere within your organization, but on a team you need someone who can put their own ego aside. You need someone who isn’t out to make THEMSELVES look great, but who complements everyone else on the team so that it can become the true powerhouse you always wanted it to be.

Your Goals and Your Vision

The most important step to take to build the perfect team is to make sure that everyone understands the vision of the project in front of you, the goals that you’re trying to accomplish and how they fit into the bigger picture. This is true both in terms of mobile app development and in any other industry that you happen to be talking about.

Spend time outlining your vision with your team members – remember that they have a role to play, too. Don’t tell them where you’re going to go – let them all help you decide where to go together. Make sure that all goals are clearly communicated, are actionable and are reasonable. If the most valuable employee you’ve ever seen isn’t sure what he or she should be doing to help you accomplish a goal, how is your team supposed to function? The answer is simple: it won’t.

The Perfect Team Needs a Perfect Leader

Remember when we said that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link? You could take all of this advice in mind and STILL come up short in terms of results if that weakest link happens to be the most visible one of all – yourself. People spend so much time looking at the individual strengths of employees that they often forget to pay enough attention to this one core component.

In the end, a team will only ever be as strong as the person selected to lead it. That means YOU need to understand what it takes to not only be an effective leader, but to help support your team members when they face challenges in any way that they can. You need to be supporting and encouraging collaboration. You need to understand the unique strengths that each person offers. You need to be a bold-decision maker, but never one that is above criticism. You need to encourage open and honest communication at all times because without it, you don’t have much at all but you certainly don’t have the perfect team.
